Good news, bad news for LFC and Torres
Written by Matt Ladson on October 15th, 2008

Liverpool fans and the club itself are tonight receiving the good news that their Champions League match with Atletico Madrid next week is now set to go ahead in Madrid, and possibly still at Atletico’s Vicente Calderon stadium after UEFA decided to use some common sense.

LFC, Atletico, the Spanish government and police have all called for the match to go ahead as planned in Madrid putting UEFA under pressue to postpone their ban as it arrived at such short notice.

UEFA are now set to decide whether to postpone the ban, allowing the match to go ahead as planned, or move the match to another stadium in the Madrid area - something Atletico still insist is too much of a logistical headache.

Atletico’s president, Enrique Cerezo assured fans; “I urge the fans to be calm because the game will be played at the Vicente Calderon. Any other decision would create a social, logistic and security problem.

“There is no other stadium available and we are convinced that this game will be played here because Atletico has done nothing wrong.”

For ex-Atletico striker Fernando Torres though, it comes on the night he suffered a thigh injury while on international duty for Spain and is now likely to be out for a week, meaning he will be a doubt for the Atletico match and could well miss a return to the stadium he made his name in after all. Torres was subbed after 16 minutes of Spain’s 2-1 win in Belgium.
