Rafa still waiting on contract talks
Written by Max Munton on October 8th, 2008

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has revealed his frustration that negotiations over extending his reign at Anfield have still not begun.

Despite the Spaniard’s current contract expiring in less than 2 years, and having taken the club to two European Cup finals in four years, the club are still yet to approach him regarding a new deal.

It is thought that co-owner Tom Hicks wants to keep Benitez on, but is struggling to convince his business partner George Gillett to agree.

Benitez wants to stay on at the club to continue his long-term aims at getting the Reds back to the top of English football.

Liverpool currently sit joint-top of the Premier League after an impressive start to the new campaign.

Benitez says, “I would prefer to have a long-term contract and then you can have a long-term plan. All managers need time but it is more difficult to get that now.

“All managers are in the same situation. The problem in England now is that everyone wants to be successful too soon. That is the part of the game I don’t like. But I’m really pleased to be here and I have two more years left on my contract, so right now I’m just trying to do my job as best I can. I’ve always said I want to stay here for many years.”
