Latest Transfer Rumours: Pennant & Agger off to Milan
January 5th, 2009
You are here: Home » News » Latest Transfer Rumours: Pennant & Agger off to Milan

The bizarre case of Jermaine Pennant continued on Monday night when reports suggesting the out-of-favour, and this summer out-of-contract, winger has been offered a Bosman contract by Italian giants AC Milan.

In recent weeks the former Arsenal and Birmingham midfielder has been linked with moves to Real Madrid, Wigan, Blackburn and Hull City.

Pennant’s proposed move to Real allegedly fell through due to his wage demands, but Milan are offering a pre-contract agreement, according to The Times, which would see him join when his current Anfield deal expires this summer.

While another, more in-favour, Liverpool player is also linked with a move to the San Siro with The Daily Mail reporting AC Milan are prepared to pay £8.5m for centre back Daniel Agger. The Mail write:

AggerReports in Italy claim that Agger has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave Anfield for £7million at the end of the season. But Milan are prepared to spend as much as £8.5m now to secure his signing as they look for replacements for ageing centre-backs Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Nesta.

The Denmark defender has been negotiating a new deal at Liverpool, but rejected the latest contract, thought to be worth £75,000 a week to the 24-year-old. Agger joined the Barclays Premier League leaders from Brondby in 2004 for £5.8million making him the most expensive player sold by a Danish club.

With Martin Skrtel back to fitness following a cruciate knee injury, Agger could find his chances more limited in the upcoming weeks, but selling the impressive defender would not be viewed as a good move by most fans, with a future Agger-Skrtel partnership looking very strong once Carragher retires. Indeed, The Guardian report Liverpool have told Milan they will not be selling Agger.

Meanwhile, Spanish football correspondent Guillem Balague claims Portsmouth full back Glen Johnson has not undergone a medical at Anfield contrary to recent speculation. Balague writes;

“In fact, I don’t think that a serious bid is going to be made for Glen Johnson by Liverpool at this moment in time: the right back position is not a major priority for Benitez and with the Liverpool boss needing to sell before he can buy, why spend between £9 -12 million on that position when other areas are in more pressing need of reinforcement.”

Finally, Emiliano Insua’s call-up for Argentina’s under-20’s means Andrea Dossena is unlikely to be sold, with Benitez insisting on Monday; “I have not considered selling Andrea Dossena. I think it is important to keep people together now.”
