No. 69 – Liverpool 7-0 Oulu Palloseura

During the 1980/81 season, Liverpool had outclassed their Finnish European opponents Oulu Palloseura with a comfortable 11-2 triumph on aggregate.

The following year, 30th September 1981 saw Liverpool and Oulu Palloseura clash again in the First Round of the 1981/82 European Cup at Anfield but this time the Finnish opponents received a slightly more respectful drubbing, eight goals to nil on aggregate. It was an emotional night at Anfield ‘“ one of the saddest nights on the Kop.

Liverpool won 7-0 on the night at Anfield, having won the first leg 1-0. The players and the Kop were in inspirational form as we eased into the second round of the European Cup, Mark Lawrenson and Ian Rush both opened their Liverpool goalscoring account that night while Daglish, Ray Kennedy, Johnson and a brace from Terry McDermott completed the win.

However, Bill Shankly had passed away the previous day, Shankly died from a heart attack just seven years after leaving his beloved Liverpool, at the age of 68. The supporters tribute to Bill Shankly at Anfield that night will never be forgotten, throughout the second half, the Kop simply sang “Shankly, Shankly” to the tune of Amazing Grace, a banner was also unfurled on the Kop which read “Shankly Lives Forever”….
