Liverpool signed Italian midfielder Alberto Aquilani from AS Roma in August 2009, for a reported £17m.
Aquilani arrives as a direct replacement for former midfielder Xabi Alonso, who joined Real Madrid days earlier after a long protracted transfer saga.
On Aquilani’s arrival, manager Rafa Benitez said Aquilani is a player with more mobility {than Alonso], playing a little bit higher. He can pass the ball and keep getting into the box. He can play as second striker if necessary, but his best position will be between Gerrard and Mascherano.”
Aquilani himself told the media ‘œRafa was very important in me coming here. Riise spoke very well of him and said he could help me grow as a player.
‘œI was already aware and appreciated his work even before the opportunity arose to come here. I like the way the team plays and certainly it was a deciding factor.”
He is yet to make his Reds debut as he is sidelined with an ankle injury, a return date of late September is penciled in.
