Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard spared England’s blushes by scoring late goals in a 2-0 victory over a brave Trinidad and Tobago side in their World Cup game in Nuremberg.

An 83rd minute cross was headed home by Crouch to open the scoring and Gerrard added a second with powerful strike in injury time.

The win seals a place in the last 16 for England but in truth it was a poor display from Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side.

One of the few plus points for them was the return of Wayne Rooney, who came on as a 58th-minute substitute.
