No. 30 – The Kop’s Last Stand
The 30th of April 1994 will always be remembered as the day Liverpool and Anfield said a fond farewell to the Standing Kop.
44,339 filled Anfield on the day Liverpool played Norwich City on the final day of the season and were beaten 1-0 by Norwich City, a Jeremy Goss goal at the Kop end proved the only goal of the game – but the result was irrelevant. This was a highly emotional afternoon and there was more than a tear or two in the eyes of some old and young Kopites.
The original all-standing Kop, which stood from 1906 to 1994, played a key part in the clubs history during its glory years.
Liverpool legends were welcomed onto the pitch such as Phil Thompson Kenny Dalglish, Ian Callaghan, Albert Stubbins, Tommy Smith, Steve Heighway, David Johnson, David Fairclough, and Billy Liddell were saluted as Joe Fagan escorted the widows Nessie Shankly and Jessie Paisley onto the pitch before an awesome roar of approval.
It was an emotional day, a day that will be etched into the memories and history books of the club forever…..
