Hodgson reveals Carra and Gerrard helped convince Cole

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has spoken of his delight at signing former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole.

Liverpool sign Joe Cole on a four-year deal

The England international is due to undergo a medical at the club’s pre-season training camp in Switzerland today, before completing the formalities of the move.

Cole rejected offers from both Arsenal and Tottenham to stay in London and play Champions League football in favour of the move to Merseyside.

And Hodgson says moves to convince Cole to join the club began several weeks ago.

He said, “Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard did a good job selling the club to Joe during the World Cup. It took a bit of selling to persuade a Londoner to move up to Liverpool. The simple solution would have been for him to stay in the London area.”

Hodgson added that he will endeavor the improve the Reds’ squad further before the new season gets underway.

“It’s very important that we try to improve the squad as much as we can to reach the goals that we have set,” he told Talksport.

“It’s good to hear that the reaction has been as positive as our reaction, now it’s up to Joe to show on the field that he is the right man.

“We are not alone in wanting to improve our squad. We are working hard on a number of targets. We want to make the squad as competitive as we can, as it could be a long season.”
