Another medical booked at Liverpool

Liverpool’s summer transfer spending spree will continue next week when Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet arrives to complete his move from Sunderland.

The Reds have today confirmed the signing of Spanish forward Luis Alberto from Sevilla, whilst defender Kolo Toure and striker Iago Aspas are also moving to Merseyside.

Liverpool have now agreed a fee for highly rated Mignolet and the 24-year-old will arrive at Melwood early next week to undergo his medical and sign an expected 4-year deal.

BBC Sport’s Phil McNulty writes:

The Belgium international is expected on Merseyside in the next few days to undergo a medical and complete the formalities of the move.

The Guardian report that Mignolet will cost just over £11m:

Weeks of negotiation concluded with a deal for the 25-year-old, who is now scheduled to travel to Merseyside for a medical and discussion over personal terms early next week.

The Liverpool Echo report the fee at £9m, with personal terms and medical to be agreed once he returns from holiday. He is expected to sign a five-year deal.

The signing of Mignolet will no doubt increase speculation over the future of Pepe Reina’s career at Liverpool.

The Spaniard has made it clear he does not expect to leave Anfield this summer, however bookies have slashed odds on him signing for Barcelona to just 9/4.

The spending may not stop at Mignolet, either.

Brendan Rodgers is said to be keen on making £22million Armenian international midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan his marquee summer signing, whilst Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori is also being linked.
