Liverpool’s long-running summer centre-forward target Christian Benteke is set to make the switch from Aston Villa in the coming days, reports claim.
Aston Villa‘s Christian Benteke, Liverpool’s No. 1 priority in reinforcing their attacking ranks this summer, could be close to making the move from Villa Park to Anfield.
That is if reports on Wednesday morning are to be believed, with talkSPORT claiming an exclusive with regards to the deal.
Wirral-based Liverpool reporter Graham Beecroft, formerly a presenter with talkSPORT, told Alan Brazil: “My understanding is Christian Benteke, who has been on their radar for some time, is very close indeed to signing for Liverpool.
“I expect him to sign if not today then certainly in the not too distant future.
“Liverpool have done their work and have sealed a deal [with Aston Villa].”
Whether these reports are credible or not remains to be seen, as this may merely represent a relatively informed stab in the dark given the Reds’ widely reported interest.
But given how straightforward Liverpool have been with their transfer business so far this summer, this wouldn’t be a surprise.
The Reds have already announced five signings in Danny Ings, James Milner, Adam Bogdan, Roberto Firmino and Joe Gomez, with one more expected in Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne.
Benteke looks increasingly likely to be a Liverpool player next season.
This is despite rumoured interest in the Belgian striker from the Reds’ Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, with the Mirror linking Spurs with a summer move this week.
Adrian Kajumba suggested that Mauricio Pochettino’s side could use unwanted striker Emmanuel Adebayor—a favourite of Villa manager Tim Sherwood’s—as a makeweight in any deal.
However, the London Evening Standard have since quashed these links, maintaining that “his preference is a move to Liverpool.”
Whether a deal is imminent, Benteke could well be lining up in Liverpool red in 2015/16.
