Gomez, a £3.5 million signing from Charlton Athletic this summer, has played every minute of Liverpool’s three Premier League games so far – a key part of the improved defence that has kept clean sheets in all three fixtures.

Ibe started the two opening games against Stoke City and Bournemouth but lost his place to new signing Roberto Firmino against Arsenal on Monday night. He replaced the Brazilian on 63 minutes but struggled to make an impact.

Ibe has recently committed his international future to England after interest from Nigeria who he is eligible to play for too. He has been capped up to England under-20 level.

Gomez has featured most recently for England under-19s.

Gareth Southgate’s side, who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing European Championship campaign over the summer, face USA Under-23s on 3 September at Preston’s Deepdale before taking on Norway Under-21s away the following Monday.
