Liverpool’s 1978 Away Hitachi Shirt was recently made available by Campo, and they were kind enough to let us review it.

Sporting a rather nostalgic cream white with red trim, the shirt is part of a landmark occasion in not only Liverpool’s history, but English football’s.

When the player wage cap was abolished by the Football Association in 1961, and subsequently player wages began to increase, clubs began to look towards other forms of revenue to supplement their rising running costs.

Liverpool became the first team to secure an FA-authorised shirt sponsorship deal with Japanese technology company Hitachi in 1979.

Both the Reds’ home and away shirts would forever more be blazoned with a sponsor — Crown Paints, Candy, Carlsberg and Standard Chartered succeeding Hitachi.

This away shirt, made available from Campo for the modern audience, is perfectly juxtaposed in the age of hyper-consumerism in the beautiful game.

As ever with Campo’s shirts, attention to quality is paramount and the shirt has a real high luxury feel about it, made of 100% cotton, in comparison to the lighter and more flimsy shirts churned out by clubs year after year thesedays.

It is one of only a handful of shirts in the club’s history to adorn a golden Liverbird and transports the wearer back to a time of much success and trophies in Liverpool’s history.
