Southampton 1-6 Liverpool
League Cup Quarter-Final – St. Mary’s Stadium – Wednesday, 2nd December, 2015
Goals: Mane 1′ – Sturridge 25′, 29′, Origi 45′, 69′, 85′, Ibe 73′
But the way in which Liverpool responded showed their belief will have buoyed the German, as they overwhelmed the Saints to produce an emphatic 6-1 victory to secure a semi-final against Stoke City.
It was a true team performance from the Reds, with Daniel Sturridge the first of Klopp’s charges to shine.
The Belgian nudged home Alberto Moreno‘s powerful 30-yard strike to net his first goal for the Reds—though the former Sevilla man received the majority of the plaudits for his contribution.
But Origi ensured he took centre stage with his second, hammering home beyond Maarten Stekelenburg after Jordon Ibe threaded him through on goal with a perfectly weighted through ball.
Belief coursed through a battling Liverpool side, roared on by the travelling Kop.
Five minutes after he set up Origi’s second, Ibe got his name on the scoresheet, chesting down Moreno’s cross before drilling the ball low and true into the bottom corner.
It was the only 19-year-old’s second goal for the Reds, and his team-mates responded with a blistering celebration in front of the away end.
Origi made it six with four minutes to play, and Liverpool can now look to a two-legged semi-final, with dreams of a first trophy in four years becoming more and more feasible.
