Video: Liverpool FC top 10 free-kicks

Dead ball specialists – we’ve had quite a few in the Premier League. Here’s some of LFC’s best free-kicks during the last 25 years.

Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho scored the first goal of the Reds’ 2016/17 campaign with a stunning curled free-kick beyond Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech.

This marked the start of a dramatic comeback that saw Jurgen Klopp‘s side seal a 4-3 win, with Coutinho’s effort one of the finest set-piece goals Liverpool have netted since the Premier League‘s inception in 1992.

To commemorate Coutinho’s goal, Liverpool released a video package of the top 10 free-kicks scored by Reds players in the English top flight.

This included Robbie Fowler’s left-footed strike against Manchester United in 1995, Luis Suarez’s low, 30-yard conversion in the Merseyside derby in 2013 and John Arne Riise’s incredible piledriver against United in 2001.

Coutinho’s goal made the top three, but it was Gary McAllister’s sensational free-kick against Everton in 2001 that predictably took the top spot.

Fabio Aurelio, Steven Gerrard and Patrick Berger were among the other players to feature, underlining the set-piece prowess of Liverpool sides gone.

Supporters will be hoping Coutinho’s Emirates Stadium curler won’t prove to be a one-off, with Klopp’s Reds in need of consistent quality from free-kicks.

Still only 24, Coutinho will continue to develop as a player in years to come, and boasting quality from set pieces would be a formidable string to add to his bow.
