Alex Ferguson says Jurgen Klopp has turned Liverpool into title challengers

Alex Ferguson has discussed the impact Jurgen Klopp has made at Liverpool, admitting that the Reds are now undoubted contenders for the Premier League title this season.

Liverpool are flying at present, and despite a hard start to the campaign, they sit level on points with Man City and Arsenal at the top of the table.

The team has made giant strides since Klopp’s arrival just over a year ago, reaching two cup finals and playing some stunning football along the way.

Ferguson has never been quick to heap praise on Liverpool as a club, but the former Man United manager admits a title challenge will be mounted this season under Klopp.

“He has done a really good job and revived Liverpool’s enthusiasm,” Ferguson told German magazine Kicker.

“It can happen that big clubs lose it. For two decades, Liverpool changed managers without building their own identity.

“You can now well and truly sense that you have to count them in this year.

“You can see Klopp’s dedication on the sideline, I’m convinced his work in training is similar. He’s a strong personality. That’s absolutely vital at a big club.”

This is the second time Ferguson had lauded the brilliance of the 49-year-old, saying last December, “I’m worried about him because the one thing United don’t want is Liverpool to get above us.”

The current signs are only positive in that respect, and there is a feeling that the Reds are really going places with Klopp at the helm.

On Saturday, they will look to go 11 matches unbeaten, in all competitions, when they face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

While it is easy to get ahead of ourselves, the bookies still have Liverpool as firm second-favourites to lift the Premier League trophy this season – an achievement Reds supporters have dreamt about for many years.

Ferguson may have been loathed during his time as United boss, but he knows a great manager when he sees one, and Klopp falls into that category.
