Jarell Quansah earns positive reviews after making Bayer Leverkusen ‘debut’

Jarell Quansah has left a positive first impression at Bayer Leverkusen after making his first appearance for his new club in a pre-season win over VfL Bochum.

The 22-year-old joined Leverkusen in a deal worth £35 million earlier this summer, with his move prompted by a desire for regular minutes after moving to the periphery of Arne Slot‘s plans.

As a winner of the U21 Euros, Quansah sat out of his side’s first game under new manager Erik ten Hag, which ended in a 5-1 thrashing against Flamengo U20s.

On Sunday, though, he made his first pre-season appearance in a more respectable 2-0 victory over 2.Bundesliga outfit Bochum, playing 73 minutes on the right side of Leverkusen’s defence.

New signing Mark Flekken started, as did Edmond Tapsoba, Exequiel Palacios, Alex Grimaldo, Nathan Tella, Patrik Schick and Granit Xhaka, who is expected to sign for Sunderland.

Jonas Hofmann and Schick scored the goals in the first half before a raft of changes throughout the second made for a disjointed finish to the friendly.

Quansah played the fourth-most minutes of any Leverkusen player, and his performance earned a positive first impression from his new supporter base:

There are certainly caveats in the level of opposition but it is a promising first step for Quansah, who thrives with confidence and belief from those around him.

Speaking after his unofficial debut, Quansah told Leverkusen’s website: “It’s a really positive start in my career here, to start with a 2-0 win is always positive with a clean sheet but, again, there’s a lot of things to improve on.

“Game by game I’m sure we’ll get better with fitness and how we click together.”

Leverkusen’s pre-season schedule continues with meetings against Fortuna Sittard (August 1), Pisa (August 5) and Chelsea (August 8) before their season opener against Hoffenheim on August 23.
