Arne Slot confirms Liverpool are “trying to strengthen” on deadline day

Arne Slot has confirmed Liverpool are hoping for more signings before Monday’s transfer deadline, though the head coach is “more than happy” with his squad.

There are two deals which could be expected to be sealed before 7pm on Monday night: Marc Guehi arriving from Crystal Palace and Alexander Isak from Newcastle.

While both situations are complicated and certainly not guaranteed to result in either player signing a contract at the AXA Training Centre, Liverpool remain active in their pursuit.

Slot will not be present for those putting pen to paper on deadline day, with the Dutchman instead flying out to rejoin his family for the international break.

But speaking to Sky Sports after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Arsenal, he confirmed the club are “trying to strengthen.”

“[I expect to be] quite busy, because I have to take a flight at 2 o’clock, to go home, to go back to Holland!” he said.

“But no, on a serious note, let’s wait and see. Again it was positive for me that I could bring a few good substitutes in.

“I haven’t spoken to Richard [Hughes] yet. I don’t think it’s a surprise that we are trying to see if we can strengthen the squad.

“But if that is not possible, we are more than happy to do it with this team, because this team has shown that they can compete.

“The only thing that we have to find out is if we are going to go to a programme with so many games – two a week or three a week, depends on how you want to see it – if that’s enough then as well.

“But again, like I said, very happy with the team we have and they showed it again today.”

Sporting director Richard Hughes was in the stands at Anfield on Sunday and no doubt would have turned to his phone with the sight of Ibrahima Konate limping off in the second half.

Guehi was named in the Crystal Palace side to face Aston Villa later in the evening, with it clear that, as it stands, there is no deal in place for the 25-year-old yet.

Meanwhile Liverpool are yet to formalise another offer for Isak despite the Swede remaining exiled from his Newcastle teammates, who were joined by a new striker this week in the form of Nick Woltemade.

All eyes will be on Merseyside in the final 24 hours of the transfer window, with it promising to be a busy deadline day for a change.
