‘Get into them’ and Gravenberch’s last laugh – 8 things fans are talking about

Liverpool’s trip to Newcastle lived up to the billing for drama with five goals, a red card, injuries and a combined 32 fouls – not to mention a winner in the 100th minute.

The talk leading up to Liverpool’s trip to St James’ Park centred around Alexander Isak, with Newcastle turning the animosity for the striker towards Arne Slot‘s men.

There was plenty of talk before the match to ‘get into’ Liverpool, and while Eddie Howe’s men deserve credit for clawing their way back to 2-2 with 10 men, the Reds had the last laugh.

It was a gift that kept on giving, leaving fans with plenty to spot and discuss.

How did ‘Get into them’ work out?

If you were to look across social media in the build-up to the match, there was plenty about getting stuck into Liverpool, with Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes expected to do the dirty work.

You had official channels, Newcastle‘s co-owner and more stoking the flames – didn’t quite work out for them in the end, did it…and Liverpool fans were quick to let them know about it.

Ryan Gravenberch enjoyed the needle

Look at that smile.

He who laughs last, laughs the loudest.

Federico Chiesa celebrates goals like one of us

If you could only choose to watch one player celebrate a goal, it’d have to be Federico Chiesa – he’s one of us simply lost in the moment.

We imagine his thought process was a little like, ‘do I run to the bench, the corner flag or hug the next person I see?’

Never let him leave.

‘Hand him over, Newcastle!’

It was always going to happen and Liverpool fans high in the stands did not disappoint, singing, “Hand him over, hand him over, hand him over, Newcastle.”

We don’t need to tell you who that was about!

Arne Slot missed Hugo Ekitike’s goal

Hugo Ekitike scored just 20 seconds into the second half, and that was far too quick for Slot to have re-emerged from the tunnel at the end of the break.

“I don’t think my team has ever scored a goal so fast in the second half. But I heard people cheering and I thought, this can never be enough for them to score,” Slot told the BBC.

“This can never be enough for us to get a red card. So I thought maybe the player comes in for Newcastle, where the fans are a bit happy about it.”

Jeremie Frimpong watches from home

Frimpong is recovering from a hamstring injury and stayed behind, but he made sure to let us all know he was watching and celebrating with Rio Ngumoha.

Stay for his commentary!

Arne Slot pushes Rio to the away fans

Scoring the winning goal at 16 is what dreams are made of and everyone was eager to ensure Ngumoha savoured every moment, including his time in the spotlight with the away fans.

Slot himself even pushed the youngster their way after an embrace.

What a night.
