Tyler Morton wows Lyon fans with Man of the Match home debut

Tyler Morton produced a Man of the Match display on his home debut for new side Lyon, having made the bold move from Liverpool to France this summer.

It was abundantly clear that Morton was ready for a regular starting role at senior level, but few would have expected the 22-year-old to make the leap to Ligue 1.

But having tasked his agent to explore all avenues as he opted to leave Liverpool on a permanent basis, the decision was made to join Lyon in a deal worth £15 million.

The midfielder has settled quickly in his new surroundings and on Saturday made his second start in two Ligue 1 games – and for the first time at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium.

It came in a 3-0 victory over Metz that saw Morton voted Man of the Match by supporters, having excelled in a deep-lying role.

Per FotMob, the Liverpool academy graduate completed 63 of his 69 passes (91%), with four accurate long balls and three accurate crosses (both 100%), as well as winning all four of his duels.

Morton created the joint-most chances of any player (three), and while he did not claim an assist, his excellent pass cut Metz’s defence apart to allow Ainsley Maitland-Niles to tee up Corentin Tolisso for Lyon’s second goal.

He has already been compared to Andrea Pirlo by Lyon supporters and was voted their Man of the Match after a victory which kept them top of Ligue 1.

One wrote on X: “Tyler Morton, I haven’t seen a pass like that since Bruno Guimaraes.”

“It was quite an easy decision for me [to join],” Morton told reporters in a press conference before the game.

“As soon as this club came in for me, me, my family, my agent, everyone knew I was going to choose this club.

“Because of the passion the fans have, the passion the players have and how young and hungry this club is.

“It really excited me and I think it was a no-brainer for me from the off.

“I’m very happy to be here, the integration’s been very easy, the guys here, the players, the staff, everyone, are very nice people, very welcoming. I couldn’t be happier right now.”

Unlike with deals for Jarell Quansah and Ben Doak, Liverpool did not agree a buy-back clause when selling Morton, though they could profit from a 20 percent sell-on clause.
