18 Liverpool youngsters train with Alexander Isak – but no Arne Slot

With Liverpool’s full contingent of senior players yet to report back for training, 18 academy players joined Alexander Isak on his first day as a Red.

Liverpool welcomed back several first-team players on Wednesday after the international break came to an end, with Isak joined by Joe Gomez, Jeremie Frimpong, Federico Chiesa and Stefan Bajcetic.

With the rest of the senior cohort not reporting back until Thursday, they joined up with 18 youngsters for training, overseen by set-piece coach Aaron Briggs and academy coach Jay Spearing.

Arne Slot was not present as he will report back alongside the rest of his players on Thursday, three days before Liverpool’s Premier League campaign continues with a trip to Burnley.

Jayden Danns, Kieran Morrison, Kaide Gordon, Fabian Mrozek and summer signing Will Wright were among those involved, as was defender Emmanuel Airoboma on the day his first professional contract was announced.

Liverpool youngsters in training on Wednesday

Goalkeeper: Mrozek

Defenders: Lucky, Pinnington, Pitt, Airoboma, Miles, Davidson

Midfielders: Laffey, Pilling, Trueman, Onanuga

Forwards: Danns, Morrison, Wright, Gordon, Figueroa, Ahmed, Cannonier

Oakley Cannonier, perhaps best remembered for his role in the winner against Barcelona as a ball boy, was present after no summer move was agreed for the 21-year-old, who was on trial at Leeds earlier this year.

Terence Miles and Carter Pinnington, defensive pillars at academy level, were given a taste of matching up against Isak and Chiesa, as was Wellity Lucky, Josh Davidson and Lucas Pitt.

Isak, still in need of match sharpness and fitness, showed glimpses of what Liverpool can expect with tidy and clinical finishes that left a few of the youngsters watching from the ground.

While none of the young players involved on Wednesday are likely to be included on Sunday, it will have proved another invaluable experience and they will hope to catch the eye for the Carabao Cup match against Southampton.

Further opportunities will present themselves throughout the season after Liverpool decided to synchronise training times across the academy and first team.

This has and will allow for flexibility in youngsters being moved, when needed, over to the first-team pitches to train with the senior squad.
