Liverpool will have plenty on their plate in September as their Champions League and League Cup campaigns start, plus the first Merseyside derby of the season.
Arne Slot‘s men have got off to a winning start to the new season, getting points on the board while not at their best – which is what champion sides do.
The month ahead is a busy one, and it started with the transfer window closing – a sensational one for the club – as players jet off around the world for the first international break of the season.
September 2-10 – International break
These come around at the same time every season but that does not mean the feeling towards them changes, as after just three games we have to hit pause.
The majority of Liverpool’s first team will leave Merseyside and all we can do is hope they each return with a clean bill of health – but hopefully we get to see Isak in action!
September 7 – WSL season starts at Anfield
While the men’s game pauses for the international break, the Women’s Super League kicks off and for Liverpool that sees them host Everton at Anfield (12pm).
Gareth Taylor is now the women’s manager, taking over from interim head coach Amber Whiteley after Matt Beard departed in February.
It has been a big summer of change, with captain Niamh Fahey retiring, vice-captain Taylor Hinds joining Arsenal and Olivia Smith following suit in a record transfer in excess of £1 million.
September 14 – Burnley (A)
Liverpool’s return to league action after the break takes them to Turf Moor to face Scott Parker’s Burnley – the first game Isak will be eligible for.
The promoted side are among the favourites to immediately return to the second tier, but they have been strong at home to start the campaign with a win in league (Sunderland) and cup (Derby).
The Reds have won their last five games against the Clarets.
September 17 – Atletico Madrid (H)
It is then time for the first Champions League game of the season, and it sees Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid make the trip to Anfield.
It makes for quite the opening game and the atmosphere is certain to reflect that, as we all know Simeone’s side are no strangers to getting the ref on their side!
September 20 – Everton (H)
Anfield then plays host to the first Merseyside derby of the season, with David Moyes seeking to continue his side’s bright start to the new season.
It is an early start after midweek exploits in the Champions League, with a 12.30pm kickoff – not the most ideal scenario for the Reds!
September 23/24 – Southampton (H)
The third competition in a week sees Southampton make the trip to Anfield for the third round tie in the Carabao Cup – a date, at the time of writing, has yet to be confirmed.
The Saints, now managed by Will Still, are back in the Championship and were knocked out by Liverpool in the quarter-finals last year on their way to Wembley.
Expect to see Slot call on those who have started the campaign on the fringe of the first team.
September 27 – Crystal Palace (A)
The final Premier League outing of the month then takes the Reds to the capital, to face Crystal Palace in what will be a tense contest given the events around Marc Guehi’s transfer collapsing.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner was adamant he would not let his captain go in the summer and now Guehi is likely to start against the side he was expecting to join up until the very last hour of the transfer window.
A tricky trip, but Liverpool have won on seven of their last eight visits.
September 30 – Galatasaray (A)
For the first time since 2006, Liverpool meet Galatasaray and it will be a testing trip for Slot’s men with an intense atmosphere there to ‘welcome’ them.
The Turkish side were Super Lig champions last season and have started the season, at the time of writing, with four wins from four.
Keep an eye out for Liverpool’s new third kit!
Liverpool’s reunion with Adidas has already seen the new home and away kit launched at the start of August, with the collection expected to be complete this month.
The new third kit is anticipated to be popular among fans, with the ‘Sea Green’ shirt to be complemented by the Trefoil Adidas logo and a twist on the 1990s badge.
