Alexander Isak completes £125m Liverpool transfer – will wear No. 9

Liverpool have completed the signing of striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle, with the club finalising a £125 million deal they had chased for months.

Liverpool and Newcastle agreed a deal late on Sunday night, with the champions paying £125 million with no add-ons.

The 25-year-old was then permitted to undergo a medical at the AXA Training Centre as well as conducting in-house media duties before signing a six-year contract.

With those completed on Monday, Liverpool have now formally announced their most expensive signing in history – breaking the record set with Florian Wirtz‘s £116 million move from Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the summer.

Isak will wear the No. 9 shirt and could be available as early as the visit of Burnley on September 14.

“It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for,” he told the club’s official website.

“It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.”

Isak is now set to join up with the Sweden national team ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo.

Those could provide him with much-needed game time having not played or trained with the Newcastle squad since the end of May.

Isak emerged as Liverpool’s priority centre-forward target heading into the summer transfer window, and both player and club had hoped for a smooth negotiation.

But despite having made clear his intention to leave Newcastle at the end of last season, what followed was a saga only resolved on deadline day.

His absence during the pre-season schedule came as he attempted to force a move to Liverpool, opting out of a tour of Singapore and South Korea before heading to the facilities of former club Real Sociedad for fitness work.

Upon Newcastle‘s return from Asia, Isak continued to train separately from the group, which extended into the campaign proper.

A statement on the striker’s Instagram accused his club of breaking promises over a transfer, though Newcastle refuted those claims and insisted their conditions for a sale were simply not met.

Having been widely reported to seek £150 million for a player they signed from Sociedad for £63 million in 2022, the Magpies eventually agreed a significantly lower fee before deadline day.

Isak joins the likes of Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong as part of a new-look Liverpool squad in Arne Slot‘s second season.

The likelihood is that, despite his experience in the Premier League, a lack of match fitness will require time for the striker to get back up to speed.

But there will be every confidence within the club that they have acquired the No. 9 who can consistently fire them to success over the next six years and more.
