Date confirmed for Liverpool vs. Southampton in Carabao Cup third round

Liverpool were drawn against Southampton in the third round of the Carabao Cup, with the date and time for the fixture now confirmed.

The Championship side will visit Anfield on Tuesday, September 23, with kickoff at 8pm (BST).

The match will be shown live on ITV and Sky Sports in the UK.

The cup fixture sits between the Premier League visit of Everton and the trip to Crystal Palace on September 27, and will be one of three midweek games throughout the month.

Liverpool’s Champions League campaign also starts in the first midweek back from the September international break, with the clashes with Atletico Madrid and Galatasaray played within a fortnight of one another.

The winner of this tie will qualify for the fourth round, which will take place at the end of October.

Southampton, of course, are no strangers to Liverpool, having faced each other three different times last season – including in the Carabao Cup – prior to their relegation back to the Championship.

Liverpool have won eight of the last 10 meetings between the two clubs, with their last defeat against the Saints coming in January 2021 at St Mary’s.

Will Still’s side are currently 13th in the Championship and made it to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup last season – they were knocked out by the Reds on their way to the final.

Liverpool have won the League Cup more times than any other club (10), and this season’s edition could see Slot hand those on the fringe valuable minutes after learning the lesson of rotation.

Giorgi Mamardashvili, Rio Ngumoha, Giovanni Leoni and Trey Nyoni will hope to make their mark in the competition, as too Wataru Endo, Federico Chiesa and perhaps even Andy Robertson.
