AC Milan have placed an offer for Joe Gomez, but the transfer is now unlikely to happen, though a deal going through quickly for Marc Guehi could still change things.
Having first been linked on Saturday, Gomez’s potential move to Milan has gathered pace quickly.
The Times‘ Paul Joyce reported that the Serie A side made a £13 million bid and “the player was ready to leave,” according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
However, he added: “Liverpool did not authorise the transfer and Milan now drops the pursuit because it wouldn’t have the necessary time for the medical examinations.”
Merseyside reporters are also claiming the move is unlikely to happen, with a transfer dependent on the Reds signing Guehi before the transfer deadline at 7pm (BST).
Liverpool deadline day latest:
- Alexander Isak deal agreed – undergoing medical
- Harvey Elliott Aston Villa loan agreed – obligation to buy for £35m
- Joe Gomez still a chance to leave but no guarantee with 7pm deadline
- Marc Guehi deal agreed – undergoing medical in London
If this were to happen, Gomez could still leave. However, the chances of the 28-year-old completing a move and medical are decreasing quickly as we edge towards the cut-off point.
Interestingly, Crystal Palace were exploring an option to take Gomez on loan as part of a deal for Guehi, but this was described as a “non-starter for Liverpool” by Joyce on Saturday.
After Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Arsenal, in which Gomez came on for Ibrahima Konate in the 79th minute, Virgil van Dijk said: “When he came on in the circumstances he is in personally, he was outstanding.
“Obviously I speak to him quite a lot, so I know it wasn’t easy, but that says a lot about him as a person, as a player, only appreciation.
“He’s a good friend of mine, I’m just pleased for him that he could do it today. Let’s see, hopefully he can do a lot more for us this season.
“He’s my friend, of course I want him to stay. But it doesn’t work like that. I’m not the boss. It’s not a friendly business. It’s the highest world that we live in.
“Let’s see what happens. Of course I want him to stay, as a friend and as a player.”
It would now be a surprise if Gomez departed Liverpool, due to the Reds’ lack of depth at centre-half and the lack of time available to complete a move to Italy.
Signing Guehi would give Arne Slot more options at the heart of the defence, with Giovanni Leoni also arriving from Parma, but Gomez is still a versatile asset.
