7 former Liverpool players who are now free agents

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is among a selection of former Liverpool players who now find themselves without a club.

Once a footballer has played for Liverpool, they are forever linked to the Reds no matter the trajectory of their career.

Only the very best manage to make it at Anfield, though, so many good players are left hopping between clubs in search of a place they can reach their potential after leaving the Reds.

Here, we have seven former Liverpool players who are now free agents on the transfer market.

Mario Balotelli

Age: 35
Previous club: Genoa

We have all heard the stories of late-night parties and bathroom fireworks, so now the on-field quality has dried up, Mario Balotelli has found it hard to join a club that suits his wage demands.

Since his one-year stay at Anfield was followed by a season-long loan at AC Milan, he has played for no fewer than seven teams, finding most success at Nice where he scored 43 goals in 76 matches.

The maverick’s most recent destination was Serie A outfit Genoa. He played 56 minutes across six appearances at the start of last season and left this summer.

Who knows the next club to take a chance on Balotelli, if there even is another playing spell left in the Italian’s boots?

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Age: 32
Previous club: Besiktas

Unlike the man mentioned above, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain‘s potential hasn’t been fulfilled not for the want of trying; it has been injuries that have derailed the 2020 title-winner’s career.

Having left Liverpool at the expiration of his contract in 2023, Oxlade-Chamberlain moved to Besiktas and played under seven coaches as he tried to regain his form.

The high point in his Istanbul stint came when he won the Turkish Cup in 2024, but he left the Black Eagles this summer after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract, with the midfielder seeking a return to England.

Over the summer, Birmingham were most heavily-linked club to Oxlade-Chamberlain, but he still hasn’t signed a contract.

Victor Moses

Age: 34
Previous club: Luton

A great winger on his day, the career of Victor Moses has arguably gone under the radar.

Following his relatively unsuccessful time under Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool, he became a key part of Antonio Conte’s Premier League-winning side at Chelsea.

He also won two Europa League trophies and the FA Cup with the Londoners, as well as the Africa Cup of Nations for Nigeria and the Russian Cup with Spartak Moscow.

The 34-year-old now finds himself without a club after a year in the Championship playing on the flanks for Luton.

Javier Manquillo

Age: 31
Previous club: Celta Vigo

Javier Manquillo arrived at Liverpool in an unusual manner, signing a two-year loan deal from Atletico Madrid.

This was terminated after just a year, though, with the Spanish right-back subsequently going back out on loan to Marseille and Sunderland before finally finding a home at Newcastle.

Newcastle paid £4.5 million to secure his services in 2017, and he stayed for six-and-a-half years, playing 110 times for the Magpies.

He then spent a year at Celta Vigo but hasn’t been signed by a club since his exit at the end of June.

Jordon Ibe

Age: 29
Previous club: Hungerford Town

Ibe was considered an outstanding prospect in the academy and made 58 appearances for Liverpool before loan spells at Birmingham and Derby culminated in a permanent move to Bournemouth in 2016.

Such were Ibe’s talents that Bournemouth paid £15m for the youngster. He was just 20 years old at the time.

Having suffered from depression during his career, eight-and-a-half years later he joined the Southern Premier Division South side, Hungerford, who play in the seventh tier of English football.

He left in the summer, though, and is yet to sign a permanent deal for another club – a proposed move to Swedish side Umea FC fell through due to work permit issues.

Fabio Borini

Age: 34
Previous club: Sampdoria

Once deemed among Italy’s best attackers, Fabio Borini failed to step up to the top level when he signed for Liverpool.

Bought from Roma in 2012, he was given a go by Brendan Rodgers but scored just twice in 20 first-year appearances.

It was decided that he would go on loan to Sunderland the following season where he became a cult favourite in the north east.

However, with Luis Suarez having left for Barcelona, he was brought back to bolster Liverpool’s forward line alongside Daniel Sturridge, Balotelli and Rickie Lambert.

Again, it didn’t work out and he left for Sunderland permanently the following summer. Most recently he has trained as part of the PFA’s free agent squad in a bid to secure a new contract.

Isaac Christie-Davies

Age: 27
Previous club: KAS Eupen

Isaac Christie-Davies was at Liverpool for two years as a youngster, playing once for the senior team when Jurgen Klopp‘s side were in Qatar for the Club World Cup.

Despite losing 5-0 to Aston Villa, Christie-Davies put in a good showing that night in the League Cup, playing in central midfield next to Herbie Kane and captain for the night Pedro Chirivella.

He ultimately didn’t make the jump up to a very strong Klopp squad, so he left for Barnsley in 2020 after a short loan spell.

Since, the midfielder has cut his teeth at Dunajska Streda in Slovakia and Belgian second-tier club KAS Eupen.
