Andy Robertson assists but “not his best night” in scrappy Scotland win

Andy Robertson claimed an assist as Scotland scraped a 2-1 win over Belarus on Sunday evening, but it was deemed “not the best night” for the Liverpool vice-captain.

Scotland guaranteed a top-two finish in Group C with victory over Belarus on Sunday, as they bid for qualification to next summer’s World Cup.

It means Steve Clarke’s side will either progress directly to the tournament by topping the group next month or enter the playoff stage.

But the feeling after their close victory at Hampden Park was not wholly positive.

That includes the verdict on Robertson’s performance, with the left-back registering the assist for Scott McTominay’s goal for 2-0 but scrutinised by the Scottish media.

Robertson rated as low as 4/10

“Not his best night,” wrote the Scotsman‘s Mark Atkinson, who rated the Scotland captain as a five out of 10 and noted his involvement in a goal disallowed for Belarus’ Evgeni Malashevich and the late consolation from Hleb Kuchko.

The Mail‘s Paul Forsyth and also gave Robertson a five out of 10, noting how he was “caught on his heels twice” – which came after a similar issue for Estevao’s late winner in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea.

A worse rating of four out of 10 came from the Edinburgh Evening News‘ Lewis Anderson, writing that after a “decent start” he was “caught napping” and was “poor by his high standards.”

Robertson himself reflected the mood that, despite the result, their 2-1 victory “didn’t feel like a win.”

“It doesn’t feel good and it doesn’t feel like a win at the minute,” he told BBC Sport.

“I think you can see that by our reaction, which is hugely frustrated. The performance is nowhere near where we need it to be.

“At the start of the week we would have taken the six points and we can look back in November at where we are [and be pleased with it] but walking off the pitch it doesn’t feel good. It’s a hugely frustrating night.”

Midfielder John McGinn described Clarke’s furious reaction at half-time – when Scotland were 1-0 up – as “the wildest I’ve seen him in 72 games.”

Scotland play Greece and leaders Denmark in their final two qualifiers next month, with victory in both games ensuring they finish at the top of Group C.
