Arne Slot encouraged by Calvin Ramsay return – could offer Liverpool new option

There weren’t too many positives from Liverpool’s 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace, but Arne Slot lauded the performance of Calvin Ramsay.

The 22-year-old made his first Reds appearance in just under three years on Wednesday night, following injury problems and loan spells away from Anfield.

Ramsay shone at right-back for Liverpool while others around him struggled, making a particularly promising start before the Reds were soundly beaten.

Speaking to the press after the game, Slot said he was impressed with what he saw from the Scot and Reds debutant Kieran Morrison in defeat.

“I think Calvin had a very, very decent performance. Calm on the ball,” Slot said.

“I don’t know if I said it over here but [in] the first half-hour, I think we had better chances than them actually and he was part of that.

“He played with composure. A decent-to-good game for him.

“And I said also afterwards [to Calvin and Kieran] if you make your debut after a 3-0 loss, you might feel very, very disappointed – but the two of you can be quite happy with the way you’ve played in your first time here at Anfield.”

Ramsay may have earned right-back lifeline

Ramsay’s performance was a clear positive on a grim night at Anfield, at a time when Liverpool’s right-back options are floundering.

Jeremie Frimpong has made a slow and injury-prone start to life with the Reds, while Conor Bradley has struggled for form.

There is still a lot of work for Ramsay to do if he wants to force his way into Slot’s plans more regularly, but he arrived with a huge reputation from Aberdeen back in 2022.

His aforementioned injury woes have stunted his progress, but at 22, the one-cap Scotland international still has time on his side.

It’s now a case of Ramsay continuing to work hard with Liverpool’s U21s, proving his fitness and worth, and gradually putting more pressure on Frimpong and Bradley.

Whether a loan move in January makes sense is up for debate, but with the Reds struggling in his position, his display against Palace should be viewed as a big plus.
