Forgotten right-back still playing at Liverpool academy despite being over-age

Calvin Ramsay may have once been considered Liverpool’s next promising right-back, but he has become a forgotten man who has failed to kick on since joining the Reds.

Back in the summer of 2022, Ramsay joined Liverpool from Aberdeen for £6.5 million, coming in as a player with a big future in the game.

Still only 18 at the time, the defender had already made 39 appearances at senior level for the Dons, registering nine assists and also winning one cap for Scotland.

However, his career since hasn’t quite gone to plan and he now finds himself back in the under-21s setup at Liverpool.

So far this season, he has played six games at right-back for Rob Page’s academy side, captaining the team on occasion as a 22-year-old.

Back when he arrived, Jurgen Klopp was clearly excited about signing Ramsay, lauding him shortly before his Liverpool debut against Napoli in November 2022.

“He is an outstanding talent. We scouted him over a lot of games and he did exceptionally well,” Klopp said.

“For a young age – the way he plays – he is a real player. He is really involved in everything. He’s a real talent and I am really excited about him.”

After the appearance at home to Napoli, a second outing for Liverpool quickly came Ramsay’s way in a 0-0 draw at home to Derby in the League Cup, which Klopp’s side won on penalties.

Almost three years on, that remains the last time the now 22-year-old represented the Reds’ first team.

Loan spells at Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock have come and gone, and Ramsay is now back at Liverpool’s academy, appearing as one of the over-age players.

He was left out of the Reds’ first-team squad, training and playing for the U21s instead after not sealing another loan move.

Unfortunately for Ramsay, injuries were problematic from the off, from a hamstring pull to knee surgery, and an issue was even discovered during medical checks on the first day of pre-season.

It is a sad reminder of the impact that fitness woes can have on young players with great potential, with Ramsay expected to be a key squad player for Liverpool by this point.

Instead, it is Conor Bradley who has enjoyed the more meteoric rise out of the Reds’ young right-backs, while Neco Williams is impressing for Wales and Nottingham Forest.

At 22, Ramsay does still have time on his side, and hopefully, he can find full fitness and find a new permanent club.

That’s assuming he doesn’t make the grade at Liverpool, which feels likely currently.

Luck can go a long way on the fitness front, and frankly, Ramsay has had none of it over the past three years, with even his four loan stints only accumulating 26 appearances.
