Joe Gomez offers “no commanding presence” – only 3 players above 5/10

Joe Gomez got the worst rating in Liverpool’s bleak 3-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace, as the defender struggled to find his feet in only his second start of the season.

Arne Slot‘s side were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at Anfield on Wednesday evening, with a much-changed team outplayed by a strong Palace outfit.

Here we compare our ratings with those of the Liverpool Echo, GOAL and TIA’s readers.

On a night full of disappointing individual performances, Gomez scored lowest (3.85), not covering himself in glory for Ismaila Sarr’s opener.

GOAL’s Tom Bellwood thought the centre-back was “unable to stem the tide in a makeshift back-line,” adding that a “crude lunge” wasn’t his finest moment.

Meanwhile, This Is Anfield‘s James Nalton said that Gomez offered “no commanding presence” at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

Milos Kerkez (4.03) continues to struggle in a Reds shirt, getting the second-lowest score and again flattering to deceive.

That said, Ian Doyle of the Echo wasn’t overly scathing, claiming he was “steady enough as left wing-back” and that there were “moments of good understanding” with Rio Ngumoha (5.05).

Thee best score of the night went to Calvin Ramsay (5.55), with the defender playing his first game in a Liverpool shirt since November 2022.

What the stats say

According to our friends at FotMob, Freddie Woodman (6.7) was statistically Liverpool’s best player on his debut, even though he conceded three goals.

That sums up the Reds on the night, frankly!

Alexis Mac Allister and Chiesa – both 6.3 – were the leading outfield players, with the latter having the most shots (two) for Liverpool.

Gomez (5.2) didn’t always cover himself in glory, hence his lowest rating, but he made the joint-most defensive contributions (12) from either side, alongside Jaydee Canvot.
