A new feature-length documentary narrated by Sir Kenny Dalglish is to be released soon, with the film including unseen footage and interviews with Liverpool legends.
Arguably the greatest player in Liverpool history, Dalglish stands alone in the club’s record books as a succesful player and player-manager.
Already an icon on the pitch, he became a legend in the city for his work done after the Hillsborough disaster, a tragedy that defined a period of his life.
Now, King Kenny has told his story in a fantastic documentary from Asif Kapadia, the Oscar and BAFTA-winning director of Senna, Amy and Diego Maradona.
Kenny Dalglish will be available to watch on Amazon Prime Video from November 4, and it will be shown in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on October 29 with additional content.
Joined by wife Marina, some of his closest footballing friends, Graeme Souness and Alan Hansen, and other fans, Dalglish narrates his story over hundreds of hours of archival footage and never-before-seen personal clips.
Having grown up a Rangers fan, Dalglish crossed the Glasgow divide to play for Celtic and eventually captain the club before leaving for Liverpool in 1977.
Despite effectively replacing Kevin Keegan as the Reds’ talisman and No. 7, the British record fee of £440,000 didn’t affect the Scot as he scored the winning goal to retain the European Cup in his first season on Merseyside.
In total, would score 172 goals and assist the same number as he wrote himself into Liverpool’s history books, winning a combined 17 major honours as player then player-manager in his first spell at the club.
Later, he returned as manager in 2011, winning a further League Cup, adding to the Premier League title he had guided Blackburn to in 1995.
Director Kapadia said: “Dalglish was my hero as a kid and I had his picture on my wall in North London where I grew up.
“I wanted to make this film for people like me who remember Kenny as a player, the Celtic, Liverpool and Scottish fans, but also for my kids’ generation who only know Kenny from playing FIFA.
“They know the name but they have never seen how good he was as a player or, more importantly, what he did off the pitch for the people of Liverpool.
“Kenny was the leader who always stepped up and led us when we needed him.”
