Liverpool have not had the same right-back start for the last 7 matches

Liverpool don’t feel like a settled team this season, with their right-back situation summing up their current struggles.

The Reds rarely lose three games in a row, but when it’s just before an international break, it feels even worse!

Arne Slot is now tasked with masterminding huge improvements once his players return, with so much to work on.

New signings are still adjusting to life at Liverpool, while key figures such as Ibrahima Konate, Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah are out of form.

Away from these more obvious issues, the Reds’ right-back situation in the past seven games highlights a lack of stability in that area.

In that time, Liverpool haven’t had anyone start two matches in a row, which is a far cry from Trent Alexander-Arnold being such a constant during the Jurgen Klopp era.

Starting away to Burnley last month, Dominik Szoboszlai was used in an auxiliary role, being preferred to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong.

Both actual right-backs came on in the second half during the 1-0 win at Turf Moor, with Frimpong then starting the 3-2 victory at home to Atletico Madrid.

Continuing with the lack of right-back stability, it was Bradley’s turn to start in the Merseyside derby win over Everton at Anfield.

Frimpong got the nod against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, but struggled, with This Is Anfield‘s James Nalton saying in his player ratings:

“Made a few needless giveaways in the opening stages, and it wasn’t the most convincing performance.”

Frimpong didn’t do enough to keep his place for the defeat away to Crystal Palace, but equally, Bradley was axed at half-time after an unconvincing showing.

Szoboszlai again did well at right-back in the second half, proving to be one of the few positives, with Frimpong introduced late on.

They both started away to Galatasaray, but interestingly, it was Szoboszlai at right-back and Frimpong in the absent Mohamed Salah‘s attacking role.

Bradley replaced the Dutchman midway through the second, as Slot shuffled his pack, doing nothing to prevent Liverpool from losing in the Champions League.

Finally, the Northern Irishman came back in for last Saturday’s loss at Chelsea, but again, he was hooked at the break, as his form continues to flatter to deceive.

Liverpool’s right-back starters in the last 7 games

  • Burnley 0-1 Liverpool (Szoboszlai)
  • Liverpool 3-2 Atletico Madrid (Frimpong)
  • Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool (Szoboszlai)

As mentioned, that means a right-back hasn’t retained his place in Liverpool’s past seven matches, which is far from ideal.

In fairness to Konate, it could arguably help explain some of his poor form, with the Frenchman struggling to gain an understanding with the full-back next to him.

While Szoboszlai has been a plus at right-back, he needs to return to his favoured midfield role. Injuries to the others have played a part, it should be stressed.

Admittedly, it isn’t easy for Slot, in terms of juggling new signing Frimpong and out-of-form Bradley, but it has to be a priority after the internationals.
