Liverpool’s classy gift to former player after 17 years at Anfield

Liverpool recently gifted Tyler Morton a replica Premier League trophy to show their appreciation after 17 years at the club.

Morton was one of eight senior players to be sold in the summer, with a £15 million deal agreed with Ligue 1’s Lyon to end his association with his boyhood club.

The 22-year-old first joined the club’s academy as a five-year-old, moving up the ranks and making the first of his 14 senior appearances under Jurgen Klopp in September 2021.

The midfielder could not break into the first-team set up as a regular, and after a frustrating 2024/25 season as a backup, Morton was ready to join Lyon when they came calling in the summer.

He is now thriving in France, but Liverpool did not forget to show their appreciation for their academy graduate, sending him a replica Premier League trophy with his name and number engraved.

Morton showed off Liverpool’s gift in an interview with SPORTbible, calling it a “really classy touch from the club.”

“It was a tough season football-wise, but an amazing one off the pitch with incredible people who got me through it,” he said.

The replica trophy arrived earlier this month, and while Morton did not make a league appearance last season, the gift is deserved recognition of his contribution to the team’s success.

It is symbolic of Liverpool looking after their own and is worthy recognition for a player who graduated from their academy and is now excelling at a new club.

The 22-year-old also spoke of his frustration at only seeing 253 minutes of action last season due to the lack of trust from Arne Slot, which meant he was mentally checked out when his time at the club ended.

“Mentally, I was kind of checked out in the end. I knew it was going to happen,” Morton admitted about his exit.

“My emotions didn’t come too much on the day; it was more like ‘I need to get this move done, get myself out and go play some football’.

“The emotions came after, when I realised I wouldn’t be playing with the lads I’ve played with all my life – like Jarell, Harvey and Conor, somebody I’ve known since 11–12.”

Morton was one of six players Liverpool sold for pure profit in the summer, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Ben Doak and Nat Phillips.
