Ruben Amorim “really honest” on Liverpool as Man United defy calls to sack him

Man United head coach Ruben Amorim has been assured he will not be sacked, but ahead of the trip to Liverpool was “really honest” about the gulf between the two clubs.

Despite losing three games in a row, Arne Slot‘s Liverpool head into the weekend second in the Premier League with their next opponents sitting 10th.

Man United have taken three wins from their first seven league games this season as well as losing to League Two side Grimsby Town to exit the Carabao Cup at the second round.

Amorim’s dogmatic approach is widely acknowledged to be one of their biggest issues, but co-owner Jim Ratcliffe has defied calls to sack the head coach and even suggested he will be evaluated after three years in the job.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday, Amorim was asked about the gap between Liverpool and his side, giving a “really honest” answer.

“Sometimes things change really fast,” he told reporters including the MEN‘s Steven Railston.

“But if you see the history of both clubs, you can feel sometimes a club is winning, winning, winning, and the other club is having a bad moment.

“That happened with Liverpool when Manchester United were winning everything. And that happened to Manchester United when Liverpool was winning everything.

“We have to acknowledge that, be really honest with the fans, but we can win any game, so if we think about just winning the next game, which is the most important thing, then we can win the next game.

“If we are going to fight and be at the same level of Liverpool in the future, that is the idea. I don’t know how long it’s going to take.”

“It is going to take a while”

Amorim suggested that his United side struggles with the expectation of winning, and questioned on the club’s faith in him he admitted it would “take a while” to catch up.

“Sometimes the pressure I put on the team and myself is so much bigger. I know it is going to take a while,” he explained.

“It is really good to hear that. I think it helps our fans to understand that leadership know it is going to take a while.

“But at the same time, I don’t like that because I don’t want that feeling in our club. We need to prove that every week we are ready to win games.”

United will be without centre-backs Lisandro Martinez and Ayden Heaven for the trip to Anfield, while Amorim hinted in his press conference that wing-back Noussair Mazraoui would also not be available.
