Liverpool have persistent problem with “totally unrecognisable” second half

Florian Wirtz‘s first goal for Liverpool secured the Reds’ fourth consecutive win, but the second-half performance was far from convincing against the Premier League‘s worst team.

Going in at the break 2-0 up, Liverpool were fully in control. However, conceding their 12th set piece of the season in the league left them with just a one-goal advantage and some second-half nerves.

Thankfully, Wolves didn’t have the quality to capitalise on Liverpool’s fragility, but they did put the Reds under pressure, producing 1.01 xG to Liverpool’s 0.38 xG after the break.

Anfield enjoyed Wirtz’s display against Wolves, but worries remain over Liverpool’s ability to control games of football.

“My god that was an awful second half performance – a draw if it weren’t for Bradley – there were some good moments in the first half. I thought Wirtz was outstanding.”

“Wirtz’s best game for us this season…feel like we will be saying that a few more times from now to the end of the season.

“You can argue Wolves deserved a draw based on the second half. We just seem to not be able to control a whole game. Been rare this season.”

Jonny Caramelo in the This is Anfield comments

“No idea if sloppiness is intentional, but that second half is not what I expect, totally unrecognisable from the first half.

“We are lucky that Wolves quality’ was THAT bad, but this is not sustainable.”

Florian Wirtz is “going to run the Premier League”…

While Liverpool were far from perfect, they are now unbeaten in their last seven matches, having won the last four.

Despite a wafer-thin squad, Slot’s side are picking up points and slowly breaking back into the top four.

This may have been Liverpool’s easiest league game on paper this season, but they still needed to break Wolves down in the first half – not always an easy task when the opposition have 11 men behind the ball.
