Virgil van Dijk calls for striker signing after Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz exits

Virgil van Dijk has sought to underline Liverpool’s need for further attacking depth after defeat in the Community Shield, as the club continue to be linked to Alexander Isak.

With Liverpool sanctioning sales for Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, to Al Hilal and Bayern Munich respectively, over the last week without direct replacements, the Reds’ options have diminished.

Harvey Elliott continues to be linked with a transfer, as does Federico Chiesa, and an exit for the pair would only further reduce the players at Slot’s disposal in attack.

Speaking to reporters after his side’s shootout defeat in the Community Shield, it was posed to Van Dijk that Liverpool “have so many attacking options now,” to which he interrupted: “Do we?”

He added: “Well, we just lost Darwin, he went to Saudi and we lost Lucho, he obviously went to Bayern.

“I think there’s always room for an attacker in order to strengthen us, so let’s see what the window brings.”

While there is also the need to sign a new centre-back, the withdrawal of Hugo Ekitike at Wembley underlined the need for depth up top as Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai initially took on the role as double No. 10s.

This Is Anfield understands the club are exploring the market for a replacement for Nunez, and Isak remains the ideal candidate after being the subject of a failed £110 million bid.

Slot also did his part in hinting at the need for another striker after the match when explaining why he took Ekitike off after 71 minutes.

“For me, with only three or four days in between the Friday game [against Bournemouth], it wouldn’t be smart to play him 90 minutes,” he told reporters.
