Liverpool have been left to wait beyond the 7pm transfer deadline to learn if their £35 million deal for Marc Guehi will go through.
Club are still able to complete transfers after 7pm provided they have submitted a deal sheet before the deadline, giving them a further two hours to file necessary documentation.
While in some instances this is in order to thrash out final details or for players to undergo last-minute medicals, in Guehi’s case it rests on a crucial verdict from Crystal Palace.
It comes after a last-minute disagreement over the situation within Oliver Glasner’s squad, with the manager reported to have held late talks with his captain.
Palace had hoped to replace Guehi with Brighton centre-back Igor Julio, but despite the Brazilian completing a medical the London club were not fully satisfied with the results.
That has seemingly left Glasner and Palace chairman Steve Parish at an impasse, with the former desperate to hold onto a key player and the latter averse to turning down a fee of £35 million given Guehi has 10 months left on his contract.
Liverpool can only wait for their decision, with Arne Slot already comfortable with his senior centre-back options of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni if a deal falls through.
There is every chance the move is revived either in January or even next summer, by which point Guehi will be available on a free transfer.
But for now the focus will be on getting the England international through the door by close of play on Monday, with the defender having already completed his medical at Liverpool’s London offices and met with senior officials.
