4 unwanted records Liverpool set vs. Crystal Palace – but no regrets from Slot

Liverpool slid further into their slump with a defeat against Crystal Palace, setting four unwanted records as the pressure to string results together mounts.

Arne Slot made 10 changes to his starting lineup in the Carabao Cup tie and across the evening gave three players their debut (Freddie Woodman, Kieran Morrison and Wellity Lucky).

The majority of the senior contingent watched on from behind the bench as Liverpool exited the cup in abject fashion, firing off only one shot on target.

As per FotMob, the Reds managed an xG of only 0.45 while Palace ended their night with 1.45xG after creating 10 shots from inside Liverpool’s box.

Slot later defended his team selection and insisted his opinion was not changed despite the result, one which consigned Liverpool to their sixth defeat in seven games across all competitions.

And the unwanted records continue to come thick and fast…

Defeat sets new lows for the Reds

By failing to avoid defeat against Oliver Glasner’s side, Liverpool are now winless in their last four home games against Palace in all competitions – their last home victory was in 2021.

As per FotMob, the last time they went as many games without a victory against a ‘non-big six side’ at Anfield was between 2012 and 2014 against Aston Villa, the Reds’ next opponents.

The unwanted records do not stop there for Liverpool, though, as for the first time since 1934 the club lost a domestic cup match at Anfield by three goals without scoring.

That you have to go back to the 1934 defeat against Bolton in the FA Cup for a similar result speaks volumes of the current malaise Liverpool are experiencing.

Slot’s side have now lost six of their last seven in all competitions for only the second time in the last 70 years, the last instance was under Rafa Benitez in 2009, as per Opta’s Michael Reid.

The quicker Liverpool can dig themselves out of this hole, the better!

Another night to forget for Nallo

Amara Nallo has made two appearances for the first team off the bench, and both have ended with the 18-year-old being shown a red card.

On his debut against PSV last season, Nallo not only became the youngest-ever player to be sent off for Liverpool – beating Michael Owen‘s record – but also the first in the club’s history to be red-carded on his senior debut.

And against Palace he became the first Liverpool player in history to be red carded in back-to-back appearances, as per Reid.

Nallo was on the pitch for only 12 minutes before he was shown a straight red card, touching the ball 13 times and completing six of his nine attempted passes.

It is not a record you want for a teenager trying to make their way in the game, and you can only hope Liverpool have the support in place for him to bounce back.
