Florian Wirtz pulls off 2 dazzling assists in 5 minutes in front of Jurgen Klopp

Florian Wirtz continued his excellent run of performances in Germany with two assists in five minutes as Jurgen Klopp watched the national team thrash Slovakia 6-0.

Wirtz has struggled to score or assist with any consistency since leaving Bayer Leverkusen for Liverpool – but his form when back in Germany has been outstanding.

There were two assists in the Reds’ 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, as well as a goal in home World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland and, on Monday, two assists against Slovakia.

With former Liverpool manager Klopp watching from the stands, Wirtz produced an excellent display starting from his usual role on the left wing.

His first assist saw him combine with Nick Woltemade around the halfway line, before cutting inside onto his right foot and delivering a stunning ball over the top from his own half for Leroy Sane to collect and finish.

Five minutes later he used Woltemade’s diverting run to clip a deft pass towards the far post for Sane to make it 4-0 on the night.

Germany confirmed their place at next summer’s World Cup with Woltemade, Serge Gnabry, Ridle Baku and Assan Ouedraogo also scoring in a comprehensive victory.

Per FotMob, only centre-back Jonathan Tah (119) ended the game with more touches than Wirtz (99), despite the midfielder coming off after 77 minutes.

Including his two assists, Liverpool’s No. 7 created at least two times as many chances as any other player (six), while completing 72 of his 77 attempted passes (94%).

He was involved in the joint-most duels for Germany (six), winning three of those – also the joint-most – with two tackles and one successful dribble.

Tah (10) was also the only player to make more recoveries than Wirtz (nine) – in other words, how often a player regained possession.

Bulinews rated him a team-high nine out of 10, with writer Cameron Smith explaining: “As expected, Wirtz was Germany’s liveliest player in possession, always looking to make something happen.”

Why Klopp was watching Wirtz and Germany

The presence of Klopp in the stands was not unexpected, as the qualifier took place in Leipzig – home of Red Bull’s most prominent clubs.

Now global head of soccer for Red Bull, Klopp sat alongside the group’s technical director Mario Gomez as they cheered on their national team.

Klopp recently took up a further position as part of a new ‘expert group’ for the German Football League (DFL), designed to improve the long-term structure of the Bundesliga and football in Germany.

Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast last month, Klopp admitted that, while he currently has no plans to return to management, it is “theoretically possible” he could return to Liverpool in the future.
