Spanish forward Fernando Torres was finally unveiled as a Liverpool player on July 4th 2007, for a fee reportedly just over ₤20m - with Luis Garcia joing Atletico in a seperate deal and reducing the price. He had hit an impressive 75 goals in 5 seasons for Athletico Madrid, making him a target for many of Europe’s top clubs.
Torres was given the number 9 shirt formerly occupied by Robbie Fowler. He scored his first Liverpool goal against Chelsea at Anfield in the first home match of the 07-08 season. He grabbed his first double for the Reds in the opening game of September in the 6-0 demolition of Derby County.
Torres was an instant hit at Anfield. The Spaniard hit the back of the net 24 times in 33 Premiership games for Liverpool, and in doing so, became the record goalscorer for a foreign player in their first Premier League season. He hit three hat-ticks in all competitions in his debut season helping become a firm fans favourite.
Having previously played in Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup for Spain, he was selected again for Euro 2008, where he went on to score the winning goal against Germany in the final.
