Rumour Mill: Johnson, Distin, Tuncay developments

Liverpool look set to miss out on their reported transfer target of Portsmouth right-back Glenn Johnson, with his former club Chelsea set to put up £17million to hijack the Reds’ bid.

The England international left Stamford Bridge just two years ago for just £4million, but the Daily Mail reports this morning that new manager Carlos Ancelotti is keen to bring him back to West London.

The paper says that Liverpool have upped their bid, but look set to miss out on the 24-year-old due to Chelsea‘s financial power.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough striker Tuncay says he has heard of interest in him from Liverpool with The Mirror this morning reporting that Rafa Benitez is set to swoop for the cut-price Turkish international, who was relegated with Middlesbrough two weeks ago.

Tuncay fits the bill, with his selfless running and great industry in creating chances for others.

On the speculation linking him with Liverpool, Tuncay said yesterday, “Yes, I’ve heard something about that, but nothing official has arrived to me. Of course I would like to play for a big club.”

And The Times says that Benitez is persuing £2million rated Portsmouth defender Sylvain Distin as a replacement for Sami Hyypia.

The 31-year-old has one year remaining on his contract and Portsmouth may wish to get some money from his sale before he is allowed to leave on a free transfer.
