Kewell goal puts Aussies through

Harry Kewell’s late volley from close range proved the crucial goal as Australia drew with Croatia to secure a place in the last 16 of the World Cup.

Kewell was pretty ineffective throughout the game, frequently over-running the ball, but he kept his cool to control and volley from the six yard box as Australia threw everything at Croatia who were leading 2-1.

The Aussies will now face Italy in the second round on Monday.

In an exciting and physical game English referee Graham Poll struggled to stay on top of things and somehow managed to book Croatia centre back Simunic three times! I doubt we will be seeing Mr Poll in the latter stages of the tournament now!

Simunic’s third yellow resulted in a red right at full time, while Simic and Emerton had both been sent off in the frantic five minutes at the end.

  • Elsewhere, Xabi Alonso should play a part for Spain as they finish their group on Friday against Saudi Arabia.
