Benitez delighted after difficult win

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez says he is proud of his makeshift team after they overcame a tough battle from League One leaders Leeds United to reach the fourth round of the Carling Cup tonight.

A second half strike from David N’gog was the only thing to separate the two sides in a hard-fought game at Elland Road.

And Benitez, who chose to give more of his squad players a run-out, was pleased with the performance.

“It was a good game. They had some chances, we had some chances. At the end we won with a lot of players who haven’t been playing,” said Benitez.

“It is a difficult stadium to come to. They’ve won many games in a row. In these types of games it is very important to keep the mentality and character.

“I am really pleased with my team, with my squad. We showed we can manage with different players. For the rest of the season it is important to know you have players who can come in and perform.”

Liverpool now regroup and face Hull City at home in the Premier League this Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is 3pm.
