Reds withdraw from international duty

Steven Gerrard and Martin Kelly have been forced to withdraw from forthcoming England and England U-21 matches respectively.

Gerrard pulled up with a slight groin injury during Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

He will miss England’s friendly in Denmark this Wednesday, with Reds boss Kenny Dalglish explaining, “He has to go so they can have a look at him but we’ve spoken to England and he’ll not be playing.”

Meanwhile Kelly will miss the England U-21’s friendly against Italy on Tuesday night.

Liverpool Head of Sports Medicine and Science told the club’s official website, “Martin suffered a sprained ankle during yesterday’s game. He was treated at half time and able to continue but it was very sore after the game.”

Glen Johnson is now the only Liverpool player in Fabio Capello’s squad to face Denmark in Copenhagen.
