Reds wrap up Downing & Doni deals

Liverpool have completed the signings of midfielder Stewart Downing and goalkeeper Alexander Doni from Aston Villa and Roma respectively.

Downing, the England international, arrives for a fee that could reach £20m, while Doni is a free transfer.

“It has been a long time coming and I’ve had to wait a few weeks, but I’m really pleased to be here,” said Downing, who joined Villa from Middlesbrough for £10m in 2009.

Downing had handed in a transfer request at Villa to force through the move and has signed a long term contract at LFC.

Doni, 31, who has 10 caps for Brazil, has been brought in as back-up to Liverpool’s current number one Pepe Reina. He has signed a two-year deal.

Neither player has yet been assigned a squad number. They join Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam as the Reds’ signings so far this summer – taking Kenny Dalglish‘s spending this summer so far to around £40m.
