Lucas Leiva posts “goodbye” message to Liverpool?

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has opened speculation over his future after posting a message on his Instagram saying “goodbye”.

The Brazilian midfielder wrote “Yesterday I finished my 7th season with Liverpool. I want to thank the ones who supported me all this years. #thankyou #goodbye”.

That could be, of course, the 27-year-old saying goodbye for the season, or possibly more of a goodbye to the club.

UPDATE: Lucas has since posted a tweet saying “The goodbye that I said it is about the season that finished nothing else.”

After recovering from multiple serious injuries in recent years, Lucas has found himself on the periphery of Brendan Rodgers’ squad this season, behind Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson, Steven Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho in the midfield pecking order.

Lucas has started 21 times but rarely has he done so other than due to injury to other players.

His recent outings against Norwich, Chelsea and Crystal Palace in Henderson’s absence showed why he may struggle to regain a starting place again.

Lucas’ role has also been largely affected by Gerrard’s conversion to a deep-lying playmaker since the turn of New Year.

He is also likely to find opportunities even harder next season once Rodgers signs new players this summer, with Adam Lallana looking the likely first addition.
