We’ll probably never find out the full story behind the collapse of the DIC takeover bid last week, but whatever the reason, I have a really good feeling that things have worked out for the best.
There was a lot of angry voices (including my own) directed towards David Moores and the board after last weeks debacle, but I think on this occasion we must compliment them in moving so swiftly to accept the offer of George Gillett and Tom Hicks. The considerable wealth of these two American tycoons may be dwarfed in comparison to DIC, but that didn’t stop them from not only out-bidding but also out-smarting the Saudi’s. This along with the pace in which they moved to secure the takeover has been very impressive and I feel that having such quick and decisive guys in the boardroom is just what we need to take the club forward.
I must admit that little more then a week ago, I didn’t care much for George Gillett and I’d never even heard of Tom Hicks. All I’d heard about Gillett was that he was some American guy who apparently had a crazy idea of sharing a stadium with that small club on the other side of Stanley Park. I didn’t take him too seriously because I figured DIC were about to take over the club anyway, so I didn’t bother looking any further. However, since the DIC deal fell through I read whatever I could find about both Gillett and Hicks, and the more I read the more impressed I became.
Gillett is a very interesting character, who has a very strong background in sports. In his early career he was involved with the Miami Dolphins and was the owner of the Harlem Globetrotters. He went on to build himself a bit of an empire but it all fell apart when one of his business deal’s in the early 90’s, turned sour and he ended up bankrupt. Although he lost the cash, he didn’t lose the lesson and rebuilt his empire virtually from scratch.
Six years ago he took over the Montreal Canadians ice hockey team and although the Canadian fans didn’t initially welcome having an American owner (sound familiar?), he soon won them over. I checked out their website over the last few days and there seems to be no issues with their fans, other then the fact that they are slightly worried he might become more interested in Liverpool then he is in their team.
Other then sports, I gather he is also particularly strong in the area’s of marketing and media. When he made an unsuccessful bid to take over the club last November, Rick Parry said he wished the club well and then asked him in what areas did his bid fall down. Armed with this information he returned home and sought out his old friend Tom Hicks.
Hicks is a Texas billionaire. He is the owner of the Dallas Stars ice hockey team and the Texas Rangers, a major league baseball team as well as a multitude of other businesses. Both sides have enjoyed great success since he took them over and he has been instrumental in acquiring many big name players. And it looks like he might continue this trend with Liverpool, as he said in an interview yesterday, “If you have a chance to get a great player, you get a great player. “We’re not going to put a budget on what we’re going to do.”
He is also heavily involved in real estate and according to the BBC, ‘Hicks has built up a reputation for developing state-of-the-art new stadia for his teams and his participation was a key factor in Liverpool deciding to go with the US bid.’
So all in all these two seem to be a perfect fit and have the necessary funds and experience in the right areas to really make this club a force to be reckoned with both on and off the field. This deal has brought us everything we could have hoped for. £45 million will be used to pay off the clubs current debts, we now have the funds for the new stadium and work can finally get underway, Rafa will have funds to compete at the top level of the transfer market and Gillett has been quick to rule out any possibility of a stadium share with little Everton.
This takeover has received a cautious welcome by Liverpool fans and there are a few who don’t seem to welcome it at all, but I have to say, I’m delighted. As far as I’m concerned, we’re a damn sight better off now, then we have been for many years. I admit that no matter who took over, I’d be saying that we’ve got to support them and give them a chance. However, I really like these guys.
They are winners and I’m excited about the future of the club in their hands. Time will tell of course, but all the pieces now appear to be falling into place and with Rafa having a level playing field in the transfer market, I think our chances of finally getting our hands on another league title have moved an awful lot closer. So I welcome Mr Gillett and Mr Hicks and I truly believe that with the club in their hands, the future will be bright, the future will be RED!
I got this comment sent to me by e-mail from R Dutton;
well here we are, feb 7th 2007 and he face of liverpool fc has changed
forever! i sat here y’day watching the live press conference and it
suddenly dawned on me that this was possibly the most pivotal moments in
our club’s history unfolding right before my very eyes.
was i sad? in a way, say what u want about david moores but he is liverpool
fc to the bone and always will be. it must have been heartwrenching for him
to pass the torch but even i realise deep down it had to be done.
well gillet & hicks said all the right things but even the most ardent red
must be a tad bit sceptical, i am. guess it’s the not knowing what lies
ahead that worries me. all i want is for liverpool fc to keep it’s identity
and not turn into another chavski. that would kill me.
interesting times lay ahead for the club and it’s fans, it won’t happen
overnite tho. rafa is a shrewd customer and won’t go out and buy every
player in sight like chavski for stupid £ so nobody else can have them.
also the new stadium. mate of mine said “how can they not call it anfield?”
simple, if sum1 offers u £100million over x amount of years to put their
name on the stadium u can’t argue! well, u can but the shankly gates,
paisley gates and hillsborough memorial will still be their, this will be
anfield.
many thanks! ynwa!

I believe Moores has handed over the future of Liverpool F.C. to 2 astute sports businessmen.
I believe we will see the world wearing red.
I believe our team will be made stronger and better.
I believe Rafa will astonish fans with his choice of players he chooses to buy.
I believe sooner than later Liverpol will once again sit atop of the Preniere League.
I believe YNWA.

Umm… be careful what you wish for. Tom Hicks is vilified for his ownership of his baseball team, the Texas Rangers for signing Alex Rodriguez to the biggest contract in the history of sports. Since then, he’s been a spendthrift and the local media hates him.

Messers Gillet & Hicks bring a lot of sports business knowledge to Liverpool F.C. and a commodity which has been wholely lacking, how important marketing is. With ideas of a new stadium and quality players in every position, marketing is not very sexy, but oh boy is it a BIG money earner! Weeks before Xmas the team shop was “out of stock”, the special Champions shirt in red & gold sold out before it went on sale; thousands and thousands of pounds wasted. People talk about Asia being a big market, er not really; lots of people who know squat about football.
USA, yeah guaranteed money but pay back small.
BUT S. America ….. a football playing continent which has produced some of the most sublime players ever to grace the turf, S. America is where Liverpool should be going for exhibitions. We have a large Sanish contingent, Aurelio from Brazil, Gonzalez from Chile, and Paletta and Mascherano from Argentina. Playing clubs in these countries will not only expose Liverpool to the S. American fans but also their players, and don’t forget the good-will and direct contct with officials of the clubs.
Er, sorry stoned and got carried away.

Despite everything you all say, ‘your’ club has been sold to a couple of dodgy Texan republicans. You have nothing left that actually links you to the City of Liverpool. Anyone can attach themselves to a successful brand but it means nothing really, despite all the success the new brand may have. The link with the past has gone. I watched the press conference, initially with envy and then I heard those accents and I actually felt quite sad. The new global world of football has become a fast food commodity. Kids in Thailand chanting Liverpool! Doesn’t feel right to me. I genuinely hope Kenwright doesn’t take us the same way!

gazmaninaus Posted on February 8, 2007 @ 9:16 am
Mr Reality, Kenwrights never going to take you lot to Thailand so you can chant Liverpool, it just wont happen.
All jokes aside the world of sport is all about money, so thats why there is haves and have nots. Just glad to be on haves for a while.
Marketing is now what makes sport and fast food so successful. Just hope it all works out.

Hummmmm………
We’ll see how this works out, but I have to admit I’m still a bit worried.
Yea, these guys said all the right words at the press conference, but to me action speaks louder than words.
Also, some of the shite that they were spouting out was embarrising, the most important game in the world, the most important club in the world…….that’s not actually the case. Even though LFC has a great history and to its supporters its the most important club in the world it isn’t – yet.
If yankX2 can make us the most important club in the world then great, but we have a (fair) bit to go before we get to take over the Madrid, Barca, Milan and even ManU and Chelshit’s of this world. To do this we must go into every competition as one of the hot favorites, and be prepared to buy the best (not the most expensive, the best – there is a big difference). That’s what makes us the most important club – we’ll be setting the agenda.
But the most worrying bit for me is what will happen if we have a period were things aren’t going well for us. Will Rafa still get the support and backing that he will need to get things right – which he will with time – or will he be put under pressure and be forced out.
And finally, these guys WILL sell up some day. Will they take as much care as Moores or will they give a feck and just go for the greenbacks……
I’m normally very optimistic, but I’m just a little nervous about this. I don’t necessarily believe all that was said by these two guys. It was all the right things, but do I believe them……..I’m not sure
Finally, thanks David. You were a fantastic custodian of the club and we were honored to have one of our own leading from the front with such class, honour and integrity. You will be sorely missed.

In this very website earlier on in the year I questioned whether ‘big name’ players would be attrated to Liverpool. I believe the sale has raised Liverpool’s visability worldwide, and hopefully it will attract great players to Anfield, then on to the new stadium. A new stadium which could really kick ass if the press about Hicks is to be believed.
There have been sooooooo many games in the last few seasons where we have been all over an oposition and have failed to put one in the onion bag, and have either lost 1 nil or drawn nil all. The one thing I have believed for some time is that we need a few world-class players. At the moment, we have only Stevie G. We have some excellent players, but only one I think we can call world class. Someone that can find the net with consistancy.
And I also think we have increased the chances of keeping Stevie G by about 1000%.
Bring on the Yanks, they HAVE to be better than a Russian playboy.

I’ve watched the press conference and the individual interviews with Parry, Gillett and Hicks, and then the textual inteviews with the same and with Moores.
First thing out of all that was how sad I felt for Mr Moores, I couldn’t imagine having to do what he has done, his sacrifice. He taken 3 years or so to find the right people for the club and I have faith he has done the right thing. A lot of people slagged him off for messing about with DIC and waiting out for the money. I just hope those people regret those words. Mr Moores has done the best he could for this club and truly believes selling to the Gillett and Hicks is the best thing. It must be like give you child away to another set of parents in order to give your child the best in life.
Mr Moores you have my respect and You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Second interesting thing about the takeover was DIC’s top people never met Mr Moores or Parry. Surely if you’re that big fans you would have? Would the “fans”/top people attend any of the matches? Again in the interviews Mr Moores/Parry, can’t remember which, had some nagging doubts about the DIC bid and I guess the ultimatum was the final straw.
I’m very excited about what this can do for the club and even though we still have the CL and still an outside chance of 2nd or even further distant 1st I can’t help wanting the season to be over, and see what Rafa can do with some cash behind him. I think Chelski and Manure should start to worry. We have the best manager who can do wonders with average players (CL 05), what a force he will be with the players he really wants.
Gillett and Hicks – time to start putting action to those words. The mighty reds are getting mightier!

I know this is the wrong blog for this but to re-ignite the previous debate does this list represent big clubs? Football Club Top 20 Rich List
This list contains people like West Ham, Newcastle and Tottenham!
Someone is missing from this list…can’t think who.

Anyone seen CSKA London fans going mental about us being taken over. Its brilliant I love it. Bit rich coming from them. Next thing they know, Terry Butcher will be coaching at stamford bridge when Roman gets tired of his blue toy!

Who bloody cares??
It proves that something must have struck a chord when rafa said small teams, and that’s probably because it is, if not entirely, at least partially true.
Of course, Gerry’s gonna’ have fun with it, what else as a reader would you expect??
There were Barca and Roma players making similar comments about Liverpool before the draw, but did you see Rick Parry, Rafa Benitez and the fugees making a fuss about it??
A comment was made, move on; and please – Stop coming to Liverpool blogs and websites if you can’t handle what’s being written, or you plainly don’t have a sense of humour.
Didn’t a great man once say, that if Everton were playing at the bottom of his gardens, he’d pull the curtains?

If nothing else the clinching of the deal moves us from the state of limbo that we seem to have found ourselves in for the past season and a half, which has been reflected on the park. That can only be positive.
A few sleepless nights for all players concerned but hopefully this deal can have a positive effect for the rest of this season as players start to play for their jobs. Which ones crave keeping a Red shirt on their back?
Infinity and beyond (With hope in our hearts).

The fact that these lads own the Montreal Canadians, and haven’t pissed that crew off too badly (yet), means that I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for the moment. But what I don’t understand is why if Moores only had the best interest of the club at hand/didn’t want to give up control/blah blah blah – why didn’t he accept Steve Morgan’s offer? Control of the club would have remained within local hands. Frankly, it reeks of him wanting to make money – and Parry’s done a terrible job – it should never have taken this long and been so publicly discussed (re: Thai PM, Dubai etc etc)

I have to apologize for slagging mr moores earlier on the way he shut out DIC and went for YankX2.
New information have been coming out only now as to why he did so… I guess this is what we call trusting in the man… and I didn’t do it. So, Mr. Moores, you certainly were entitled to more time when you had to decide who to pass on the ownership of LFC to after all that you had sacrificed for.
There are a lot of IFs here… and rightly so, but we all dream of good things… now, we have this chance to make it happen. There is certainly a great chance of making this the best and biggest most attractive club in the world… officially. We have Mr Benny who has not only formed a better performing first team, he has also brought in many many youngsters to fight for first team as well as to develop on. In Mr Benny we have one man with a great vision and we need to give him the freedom and trust and now the means to carry out this vision.
Our new top guys come in with not only cash, but also experience in marketing, sports, stadiums and winning. These ingredients along with their sons bring about a sense of good things… sure they may sell out one day but… that’s only when we succumb to failure … to stop generating income… to not only team without success but also without potential for success… quite hard to imagine that happening… but that’s a big IF… and one I am willing to live with for now… cos we have the players, we have the manager, we are getting the stadium and we will be getting more income through many other marketing strategies… all in all will generally come form the success on the field.

I have read that the design of the new stadium is so that it will reverberate the noise made by the fan’s to a bigger crescendo than it actually is,as most of you lad’s have writen, there are great time’s ahead, leaving anfield wil be soul destroying for many fan’s although i personally think the heart of the ground was taken away when they introduced seat’s in the kop, just to stand there especially 5 mins before kick off made the hair’s on my body stand on end, i tell my boy’s that there is no feeling on earth to compare.
so let’s all look to the future,if things go pear shaped (i dont think they will) we will be no better off than we were before. YNWA

We’ve done it again at St. James Park. Liverpool has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory again. I do feel that all three of our current first-choice strikers are good, but not great. Liverpool has still been sorely missing a top-class goal poacher since Michael Owen left.

well, its better to have the club in the hands of a calm poorer american than in the hands of a hot-headed filthy-rich sheikh i guess.. just imagine the sheikh withdraw all transfer funding for the season just cos we lost some crucial match? that’d be a disaster. I was quite honestly relieved to see DIC pulling out of the deal.

i’m getting very tired of hearing the opinions of everton supporters on this blog. if i wanted to hear them, i would seek them out.
i know this is unrelated to the current blog (and our club), but i just wanted to ask what people thought of henry and kirkland yesterday? personally, i think henry was totally out of line. wenger has said what he did was the right thing to do, as well. unbelievable. the thing i can’t believe is that arsenal is getting upset at a team for time wasting – when they themselves are quite possibly the biggest culprit of time wasting in the entire league. lehman especially, but all of them. everybody talks about henry and arsenal being such great ambassadors for the game, when personally, and it’s not because i don’t support them, i think arsenal are not. not to mention the fact that wigan were denied a clear penalty to take the game 2-0, and then aliadiere was offside on their first goal.

Once again good to see blueshite fans visiting a liverpool site. This gives you a chance to see how fans from a “big” club act, including – conversations about transfers that might actually come to the club rather than turn their nose up at the thought of playing for a club making up the numbers (ie. a small club), conversations about the real possibility of winning trophies and of course conversations about previous trophies, footballing legends who have played for the club and a fan base you could only dream of. Having an inferiority complex is a real bitch innit!
I wish you guys would take it easy on our blueshite visitors. Afterall, if recent reports are to be believed, its good of them to get Manuel Fernandes fit for us.
I think its a good idea for foreign players to adapt to Premiership football at a smaller club before signing for one of the big clubs.
