Aquilani confident of change in fortunes

Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani is confident the Reds will come out of their bad run of form and build their way up the Premier League table.

Rafa Benitez’s side go into their final game of 2009 this evening when the face Aston Villa at Villa Park sitting 8th in the league table, having lost seven times already.

But Aquilani, who made only his second start for the club in the Boxing Day victory over Wolves at Anfield, says the win was important for the players’ confidence.

He said, “The most important thing was that we won. We need to improve our confidence and we need to keep winning games to move up the table.

“It is crucial to take things step by step but our aim is now to win three, four and five games in a row. If we can do that, we will see where that takes us.

“Now we have to face Aston Villa. It is a very important game for our season but we are feeling good and it is important that we try to win.

“The team does not deserve its current low standing. We’ve had difficulties, but we will come out of this.”

Aston Villa vs Liverpool gets underway at 7.45pm tonight and is live on Sky Sports.
