Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has made warnings that a swift return for the club to Champions League football is “critical” for the club’s financial future.

Werner was appointed to the role when Fenway Sports Group (then known as New England Sports Ventures), purchased Liverpool in October 2010.
He is also chairman of FSG and the Boston Red Sox baseball franchise.
