Before this match Steve Bruce’s Birmingham were the only Premiership side Rafa Benitez hadn’t defeated in his first two seasons as Liverpool manager. After this result it is unlikely he will line up against Bruce again after routing his side seven nil to stroll into the semi finals of the FA Cup.
The night couldn’t have been better for Benitez, two early goals – the first inside 55 seconds, the second inside 4 minutes – two more for Crouch, another for Morientes, a wonder strike from Riise on his return from injury, a goal for Cisse and Gerrard and Crouch both being able to be rested early ahead of Saturday’s Merseyside derby.
Oh, and Momo Sissoko played 90 minutes remarkably returning just a month to the day since suffering the potentially career ending eye injury!
Birmingham were poor, but Liverpool were ruthless, hungry and in top form.
