Alonso looks to France clash

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is eyeing up a place in the World Cup Quarter Finals, with just France standing in Spain’s way in the final World Cup Second Round match tonight.

In one of the picks of the second round Spain take on the World Cup Winners from 1998, and Alonso is sure of the task Spain have to do.

“The atmosphere is always better when you are performing well and winning games,” said Alonso.

“But we know it’s a tough competition so we have to focus and concentrate. We want to go as far as possible.

“It was boost winning the first two games because we reached the knock-out stage. That’s what we wanted, now we have rested some players, and at the same time confidence in the team is high.

“I think we have the talent and the players. Obviously in the last few tournaments we have not been able to reach the final or even the semi-finals. Now we are desperate to get there and I think, with the preparations we have made, it is entirely possible that we can achieve big things.”
